New Dementia Intensive Care Unit
This new health care development for Norfolk and Waveney Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust consists of three single storey timber frame wards, all adjoining to a central area consisting of communal areas, administration areas and training facilities arranged over two storeys. This central area was achieved by using a central steel frame with timber frame infill panels.
The interface of the timber frame and steel frame structure had to be carefully co-ordinated between all the parties involved.  This helped to establish the setting out relationship between the steel frame and the timber, incorporating the deflection of the steel structure.
Timber infill panels to the core area were designed to be installed on site after the erection of the steel frame to suit the programmed sequence of construction.
Circular Central Core – based around steel columns set to the given radius. This area was achieved by using pre-cut plywood plates to the specified radius, installed on site with the modular vertical studs being ‘stick built’ in-situ.  To enhance the profile of the structural curve, two layers of 9mm OSB sheathing lapped were installed.  Architectural finishes were then added to this face.
The roof was designed with profiled Glulam feature beams and curved steel beams supporting timber roof joists finished with a sedum green roof covering.
